Gail Behrmann born in 1948, lives in Johannesburg and studied fine art under Bill Ainslie.
She combines a career in painting with that of a researcher and film maker. Behrmann was
diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis in 1988 and due to serious medical complications between
1994 and 1997, did little painting and concentrated on film making. She energetically
participates in solo and group exhibitions and private commissions.
She has been involved in theatre productions for the Handspring Puppet Company and William
Kentridge’s video installations. Additional projects include assisting and collaborating with
Angus Gibson on video installations for the Apartheid Museum, Hector Pieterson Museum, Cato
Manor Museum and Liliesleaf Trust.
Behrmann’s work is abstract, with insight from the Tang poets as interpreted by Witter Bynner
and Kian Kang-Hu, in the collection The Jade Mountain.Her pencil drawings are mainly in
Moleskine books: a series called Beyond the River & into the Trees.
Some of her collections are in South Africa, USA, Canada, Australia, England, and Israel. She has
participated in numerous group shows that includes Venice Biennale 2015 South African
Pavilion, David Krut Gallery, Goodman gallery, Absa gallery and Wits Art Museum.
