Bio

Collen Maswanganyi comes from an artistic family. Born in 1977 to his father Johannes Maswanganyi a well-known sculptor who exhibited around the world. His grandfather Piet Mafemani Maswanganyi was a carver of note as well.

Collen Studied Fine art at the then Wits Technikon now known as the University of Johannesburg. He has since been practicing as a full time artist.

2004- The Identity of South African artists- Fortis theatre, Holland

2013: Footsteps – Absa Gallery Johannesburg

2015: celebration of South African freedom- Beijing Biennale, China

2018- Dance and carve with my father, KKNK festival artist, Oudtshoorn

2018- Festival Artist at Innibos Festival Curated by Johan Myburg, Nelspruit.

2021- Solo exhibition at Turbine artfair titled Ebenezer curated by Prof Karel Nel

2022- Print the Carving, Cape Town Artsfair with Artists Proof Studio

Collen has won several awards like

2001- Absa L’atelier Top 10

2010- Absa Merit award

2018- KKNK New voice

2018- Kanna Award

2021- Recipient of Villa Trust in spirit of Jackson Hlungwani

Collen’s work forms part of several art collections like

National Museum of China and many Corporate, Private, and public collections.

Collen as an artist enjoyed numerous media coverage for his work.  Most notable recent coverage are on Art times, Africa Avant-garde on CNN, CCTV of China, SABC News weekend live and Newsroom Africa
