Chloë Shain (b. 1993, Johannesburg) is a multidisciplinary artist and anthropologist. She has an Honours in Fine Art from the University of the Witwatersrand and a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Cape Town. Shain’s practice spans a diverse range of mediums including painting, digital collage, video animation and installation. Her current body of work explores our relationships with mobile phones through touchscreen finger gestures. In 2022, Shain exhibited a sculptural installation at Nirox Sculpture Park and an installation across three locations, including The Point of Order Gallery, for the Art Matters: Inherited Histories and the Politics of Mapping Wits School of the Arts postgraduate conference. In addition, Shain took part in NewWork22 at Wits Art Museum and Turbine Art Fair’s Paper exhibition. This year, Shain was selected for Turbine Art Fair’s Unearthed mentorship programme, forming part of their group exhibition at the 2023 Turbine Art Fair.
