Turbine Art Fair
Running parallel to its major online exhibition, the RMB Turbine Art Fair 2020 offers a host of virtual talks and walkabouts featuring South African celebrities, creatives and art specialists.
Here are some highlights:
Woven, Envisioning the World Through Textile (29 Aug, 2pm) is a dialogue centering on the Tactile Visions Woven project. South Africa has an immensely rich history of tactile arts from beadwork to embroidery, leatherwork, quilts and blanket making to doilies and the weaving of baskets with telephone wires to the ability to decorate with ordinary steel pins. The discussion features Mary Sibande, Reshma Chhiba and Willemien de Villiers moderated by Sharlene Khan.
Threaded Vision (29 Aug, 11.30am) engages Craig Jacobs (founder of ethical fashion house, Fundudzi) and artist and Wits associate professor, Sharlene Khan, in a discussion about sustainability.
Becoming a Photographer The Life and Purpose of a Photojournalist (30 Aug, 3pm) engages Greg Marinovich and Musa N. Nxumalo. Marinovich is co-author of The Bang-Bang Club, a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer and documentary filmmaker.
Parallel Lives Gladys Mgudlandlu & Maggie Laubser (28 Aug, 4pm) sees Wilhelm van Rensburg of Strauss & Co. discuss the visionary nature of Laubser and Mgudlandlus work, and the lives they led in parallel to one another.
Feel it in Your Soul Collecting from Passion & Vision (29 Aug, 4pm) features Hoosein Mahomed (lawyer and collector), Isaac Shongwe (founder of Letsema Consulting and African Leadership Initiative) and Marieke Norton (UCT lecturer and collector), moderated by Laurice Taitz (director at In Your Pocket City Guides SA).
