Zemba Luzamba

Zemba Musiri Luzamba

Bio

Zemba Luzamba moved to South Africa in 1999 and is now based in Cape Town. Here he documents the lives of immigrant communities. Luzamba’s paintings reflects a positive post-colonial Africa as he creates scenes of formally dressed African people engaged in traditionally Western leisure activities – playing tennis, eating in restaurants or dancing. His work escapes the hardships of the reality, perhaps driven by Luzamba’s belief that art transcends reality, even in the throes of war. In his own words: “My mind is freed by expressing these tragedies in a colourful manner as I am also directly or indirectly involved.”

Luzamba was born in Lubumbashi, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He studied Fine Art in Lusaka, Zambia, at the Evelyn Hone College of Applied Art (1994). His second solo exhibition, Hope for Refugees, was held in Rome, Italy, in 2005 and the most recent, Genesis (2016), was held at Ebony, Franschhoek. He has participated in group exhibitions, locally and internationally.

Artworks of Luzamba are included in corporate and private collections in South Africa, Italy and America: Nando’s UK and Nando’s SA, Scalabrini House, Bassano Del Grappa, Italy; Cultures Inc. California and the Museum of Modern Art, Equatorial Guinea.
