Xhanti Zwelendaba (b.1992) is a Michealis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town, graduate and currently completing his Master of Fine Art at the University of the Witwatersrand. Zwelendaba is a multi-disciplinary artist working in a diverse range of mediums such as print-making, installation, performance art and video art. Zwelendaba’s work deals primarily with the complexities and tensions surrounding Xhosa culture and the modern day culture of contemporary capitalism and nationalism – and embedded within these is the legacy of colonialism and apartheid. This pursuance is largely spurred on by having to balance in-between these cultural paradigms, often simultaneously.
Zwelendaba’s most recent shows are Chamber of Mines at WHATIFTHEWORLD gallery in May 2016 and AMAQABA in August 2018 at Eclectica Contemporary, amongst many other group shows. He’s also been granted a residency at Nirox Foundation Sculpture Park in Johannesburg ahead of their Winter Sculpture Fair in 2017.
