Selvin November

Selvin November

Bio

elvin November describes his art career as a long and testing journey. While much of his previous work was politically inspired, his current practice is concerned with portraiture. He explores this genre using rich and inventive combinations of colour and textures to engage with issues around memory, personal identity and interpersonal relations. Drawing on techniques such as image cropping and tonal variation, November refers to his style as Afro-Pop, and seeks to reduce an image to its bare essence. His philosophy is simple “Art is life and life is art”.

November was born and still lives and works in Cape Town. He completed a Diploma in Graphic Design (Art and Design) at Cape Technikon (1992) and was awarded a three-month residency on Robben Island (1996). Solo exhibitions include The Portrait Speaks at the AVA Gallery, Cape Town (2008), Young, Free and Single at the Woordfees Festival, Stellenbosch (2019) and Freedom of the Streets at WORLDART Gallery, Cape Town (2019). He has participated in numerous group exhibitions including Sans Frontier at the AVA Gallery (2019) and Knoop at GUS, Stellenbosch (2020).
