Matsi Wa Lesego

Bio

Matsi Wa Lesego, native to East Rand Benoni, is a visual artist currently studying at the University of the Witwatersrand for a BA in Fine Arts. From a young age, she became bound to the art world as her father facilitated regular trips to museums around the Gauteng province which birthed her desire and passion to pursue a career in this industry. Having a tumultuous upbringing further inspired her to channel her thoughts and experiences through art. The opportunities and expansion of her knowledge at the WITS institution enabled her to exhibit at the African Feminisms (Afems): Theorising from the Epicenters of our Agency during her first year in 2019. This manifested in the Wits Art Museums (WAM): Echoes in Conversation A Printmaking Exhibition which took place in 2020 during the tension of the Corona Virus Pandemic, and being shortlisted for the Wits Young Artist Award: Cruel Optimism in 2021 where she was part of a group exhibition.
Her work engages with vast concepts of Identity and ontology in efforts to understand the human psyche and experiences, through predominantly mediums such as printmaking, book printing & binding, sculpture, photography, and drawing. She is currently based in Johannesburg, South Africa.
