Bio

Fleur De Cap Award Winner Lukhanyiso Skosana is, an actress, performance artist, vocalist/composer and theatre-maker. A UCT graduate, she holds an Advanced Diploma in Theatre and is currently completing her Honours via the ICA/UCT. She is trained in classical music under the critically acclaimed Lionel Van Zyl (Eastern Cape Children’s Choir) and trained in a variety of theatrical styles under international musical theatre performer Chireene Ferreira. Fitzmaurice voice-work, the Sanskrit system of “rasa”, body mapping and free writing becomes the foundation of her performance practice, under the guidance of Dr Sara Matchett.

As an actress, has had the honour of working on the production of Love like Blue directed by Puleng Lange Steward (2016). A production that had a substantial input on her spiritual awakening as a performer was Nguvu Ya Mbegu Directed by Mandla Mbothwe (2017). Bana Ba Mobu choreographed by Tshegofatso Mabutla (2017), becomes her debut dance performance and soon followed by Zinyile i’Queers (2018/2019) dance piece choreographed by her. Lukhanyiso is in the continuous process of touring and reworking, the multi-award winning production Womb of Fire/Brandbaar (2017 – present), a production written and performed by Rehane Abrahams and directed by Dr Sara Matchett. She has had the honour of being in the performance art piece Walk in India at the ITFOK festival (2018), NAF (2018) and US Woordfees (2019) curated by Dr Sara Matchett, Genna Gardini and Koleka Puthuma. She has also performed at the ICA Live Art Festival (2018/2019) in Khanyisile Mbongwa’s performance art piece kuDanger and her own piece Inkundla yobu’Febe. She took part in Body Politics 1 & 2 (2018/2019) in a collaborative durational Butoh piece titled UMGOWO and her own piece Zinyile i’Queers (2019). She made her directorial as well as playwrighting debut with her graduation productions Qamatha and Nazareth (2019)(CTDPS). Lukhanyiso is an ICA Fellow for the ICA’s Online Fellowship (2020), where she debuted her performance art short film titled The Exorcism of Mary Magdalene: A Sexual Resurrection. She was also apart of the Live Art Arcade where she presented The Exorcism of Mary Magadalene II: A Divine Intervention (2021), which was later exhibited at the National Arts Festival (2021) She has also produced the musical score for Isimo and Dwala Lam, short films by Sethembile Msezane (2021). Lukhanyiso is a Fleur De Cap Award Winner for Best Original Musical Score & Performance for Womb of Fire (2019).
